Spring Special Exhibition 2024 The Journey of Yorimichi Fujiwara

Spring Special Exhibition 2024

Commemorating the 950th Memorial of Regent Yorimichi Fujiwara

The Journey of Yorimichi Fujiwara

Yorimichi Fujiwara, a prominent court noble of the mid- to late Heian period, exerted great influence as a regent and chancellor under three emperors: Go-Ichijo, Go-Suzaku, and Go-Reizei, contributing to the peak of the Fujiwara clan's power alongside his father, Michinaga. In his later years, he retreated from public life, assuming his name Uji-dono. In the year 1052, he founded the Byodoin Temple and erected the Amida-do Hall (now known as the Phoenix Hall).

This year marks the 950th anniversary of Yorimichi's passing at the age of 83 in 1074. In commemoration, this exhibition delves into various aspects of Yorimichi's life, including his role as a poet and the religious beliefs of the Heian aristocracy that led to the establishment of the Byodoin Temple in 1052. We seek to honor the vision of the Pure Land that Yorimichi dreamed of and to rediscover the allure of the Phoenix Hall. We hope this exhibition serves as an opportunity to reflect on Yorimichi's legacy and the splendor of the Phoenix Hall once more.
