“Ocha no Kyoto” is a large-scale event held in the production areas of Japanese tea in Kyoto which aims to rediscover the cultural value of Uji tea. As one of the wrap-up events, a special exhibition featuring Japanese tea will be held at Byodoin Museum Hoshokan.

Since the temple was founded, there have always been retainers who lived in Uji and protected Byodoin Temple. They were called Byodoin Kojin. After tea cultivation began and flourished in Uji, the Byodoin Kojin greatly supported the management of tea farms and assisted in Uji’s development.

In the do period, two Kanbayashi Families, led by Hojun and Chikuan, supervised Chashi (specialists in selecting and blending the tea leaf) in the area under the staunch patronage of the Tokugawa Shogunate until the end of the Edo period. Several large fires and the Meiji Restoration devastated the Chashi’s business, however, they managed to get through the difficult times with cooperation from Chasho, the tea leaf merchants, and established the base of the acclaimed Uji tea which we still respect and enjoy today.

While the new Meiji Government promoted the modernization of the country and encouraged tea farms to produce green tea for exporting overseas, there was a man named Riemon Tsuji who never allowed the quality of Uji tea to be compromised and who made significant efforts to improve the quality of Uji tea, or the king of Japanese tea. This exhibition features Tsuji’s deeds and achievements with a number of articles from Byodoin Temple and other historical records about Uji tea.

  宇治の妙楽池殿にあった地蔵堂宝珠庵（ほうじゅあん）の住職。平等院候人の中で最も勢力のあった候人頭である新(あたらし)家の末裔で御袋茶師･長井仙斎（せんさい）の六男。元禄10（1697）年秋に完成させた宇治に伝わる最古の地誌『菟道旧記浜千鳥』を執筆する。

  星野道斎坐像 寛永17（1640）年

  平等院浄土院蔵 星野道斎（ほしのどうさい）は、御物（ごもつ）茶師･星野宗以（ほしのそうじ）家の2代目。寛永17年に宇治茶の隆盛を願い羅漢堂を建立。禁裏や東宮へも御用を賜り、主要な取引先は、加賀前田家、越後牧野家、伊予松平家など。平成26（2014）年から平成27（2015）年にかけて修理される。

  宇治製茶記念碑 明治21（1888）年建立

  明治12（1879）年、横浜で開催された第1回製茶共進会で特別賞の受賞を記念して鳳凰堂の正面対岸に建立。後に鐘楼下に移設し、鳳凰堂の昭和修理に伴う境内の整備で平等院表門前広場へ。揮毫は久邇宮（くにのみや）朝彦親王。

  辻利右衛門翁銅像 昭和8（1933）年建立

  辻利右衛門（つじりえもん）翁は、玉露製法を完成させるとともに茶櫃（缶櫃）を考案して販路を拡大するなど宇治茶の生産技術の向上に大きく貢献。
  生涯を宇治茶の発展に捧げた偉業を顕彰して旧南門近くに建碑。
  鳳翔館建設に伴う境内整備で平等院表門前広場へ。
